You may be stressed!

Stress can happen to anybody and farming is recognised as one of the most stressful areas to work.

NHS Direct Wales (2010) define stress as “the way you feel when pressure is placed on you.” Some pressure can be a positive experience and provides individuals with the motivation to perform better at something. However, when there is too much pressure or when it prolonged, it can lead to stress which is unhealthy for the mind and body (NHS Direct Wales, 2010).

Everyone reacts to pressure differently and some people are able to deal with it better than others. Individuals who suffer stress regularly are more likely to suffer physical, mental and emotional problems.

The Farm Crisis Network reported in their 2009 report on the impact of bovine TB on farming communities that almost all of the farmers interviewed showed some degree of stress with more than half admitting that they were stressed. According to the World Health Organisation , farming has become one of the most stressful areas in which to work. Life has always been hard but with the extra pressures being placed on farmers, it is becoming evident that some support is needed.
